On 23 April 2020, a majority of the members of the ICOMOS Board requested that I convene a General Assembly in accordance with Article 9-b of the Statutes, to be held virtually before 31 July 2020 (as allowed by temporary legislative measures taken by the French Government in response to the COVID19 pandemic), in order to seek the agreement of the General Assembly to hold forthcoming 2020 statutory meetings as virtual meetings.
Michael Petzet, late Honorary President of ICOMOS who passed away last year on 29 May, is celebrated by his friends and colleagues through a memorial book published by ICOMOS Germany on 18 April.
What does the future of cultural heritage look like? Is the future relevant for the way we approach heritage? These are two basic questions that the UNESCO Chair for Heritage Futures at Linnaeus University (Sweden) is concerned with. It specialises in thinking about the future of cultural heritage on a global scale. On 29 March 2020, Cornelius Holtorf, Head of the Chair, gave a webinar organised by the Emerging Professionals Working Group (EPWG) via the online service Zoom. More than 100 participants - ICOMOS members and an interested public - from all over the world zoomed into the presentation and its subsequent discussion.
The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting an ever growing number of countries and having a profound impact on our lives for a presently unforeseeable period of time. Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of our members, friends, and all parts of the extended ICOMOS family. ICOMOS expresses its solidarity with all those who are on the front-line fighting to contain this outbreak, care for its victims, and maintain civic life, and those who have already been directly affected in their wellbeing or have lost loved ones.
