What does the future of cultural heritage look like? Is the future relevant for the way we approach heritage? These are two basic questions that the UNESCO Chair for Heritage Futures at Linnaeus University (Sweden) is concerned with. It specialises in thinking about the future of cultural heritage on a global scale. On 29 March 2020, Cornelius Holtorf, Head of the Chair, gave a webinar organised by the Emerging Professionals Working Group (EPWG) via the online service Zoom. More than 100 participants - ICOMOS members and an interested public - from all over the world zoomed into the presentation and its subsequent discussion.
The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting an ever growing number of countries and having a profound impact on our lives for a presently unforeseeable period of time. Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of our members, friends, and all parts of the extended ICOMOS family. ICOMOS expresses its solidarity with all those who are on the front-line fighting to contain this outbreak, care for its victims, and maintain civic life, and those who have already been directly affected in their wellbeing or have lost loved ones.

What are human rights and what do they mean for heritage management? How are decisions made about the heritage? What norms are applied in decision making? Which values, principles and approaches guide those decisions? Are all relevant rights bearers and duty holders involved? Will all parties feel the decisions to be inclusive, effective, efficient, participatory and legitimate? How can we identify opportunities and expected heritage developments involving rights bearers? This workshop intends to address these questions and propose concrete case studies.
