ICOMOS, in partnership with the African World Heritage Fund, is currently developing a Capacity Building programme whose aim is to enhance the professional expertise of African heritage professionals to be involved in World Heritage processes.

ICOMOS is sad to hear about the passing of Finnish Architect and Urban Planner Jukka Jokilehto. Jokilehto was awarded the ICCROM Award in 2000 as well as the Honorary Membership of ICOMOS in 2014 for his outstanding work in the protection of international cultural heritage. Jukka Jokilehto greatly contributed to the shaping of the conservation field over the span of his career – his works on the history and politics of conservation, as well as conservation theory are an invaluable testimony to his considerable knowledge and expertise in the heritage field.

The workshop, which took place between November 13 and November 20, 2023 in Port Louis, Mauritius, saw the active participation of 15 professionals working with World Heritage properties in Mauritius and 10 professionals working with World Heritage properties in Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

UNESCO and the Advisory Bodies to the World Heritage Committee – ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property), ICOMOS and IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) - have released a newly revised toolkit for assessing the effectiveness of management systems of World Heritage properties. Enhancing Our Heritage Toolkit 2.0 offers a World Heritage-specific methodology of management effectiveness assessment that can be applied to cultural, natural and mixed sites.

ICOMOS, as a founding signatory, is asking the national governments that are parties to the UN Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC) and its Paris Agreement to adopt a ‘Joint Work on Culture and Climate Action’ decision (JWD) at the next UN Climate Change Conference (COP28). Artists and cultural voices from across the world are uniting to call for climate negotiators at COP28 to put cultural heritage, arts and creative industries at the heart of climate action.

For this GivingTuesday on 28 November 2023, support 4 ICOMOS National Committees, who have been going through traumatic events in their respective countries. ICOMOS Pakistan is still recovering from last year's floods, while ICOMOS Burkina Faso deals with terrorism, ICOMOS Sudan with armed conflict and ICOMOS Syria with the aftermath of this year's earthquake and an ongoing crisis.
