Heritage on the Edge is an innovative online platform that was launched by Google Arts & Culture, designed to raise awareness about the growing threats to World Cultural Heritage sites due to climate change. Developed through a year-long collaboration between ICOMOS, Google and CyArk, the platform showcased the impact of climate change on heritage sites globally.
The platform featured nearly 60 web pages, each illustrating the climate change risks and potential solutions for preserving cultural heritage. The stories were shared through the perspectives of five World Heritage sites: Rapa Nui National Park (Chile), Ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani and Ruins of Songo Mnara (Tanzania), Old and New Towns of Edinburgh (Scotland, UK), Historic Mosque City of Bagerhat (Bangladesh), and the Chan Chan Archaelogical Zone (Peru).
Members of the ICOMOS Climate Action Working Group (CAWG) provided their expertise to this project by developing training programs to assess site vulnerabilities and providing on-site support for conservation efforts.
