Opening of the Extended 45th Session of the World Heritage Committee

Riyadh WHC 45th SessionThe Opening of the Extended 45th Session of the World Heritage Committee will take place from 10 to 25 September 2023 in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Both the ICOMOS Evaluation Unit and the Monitoring Unit will be present through their Directors, along with Teresa Patricio, President of ICOMOS International, and Marie-Laure Lavenir, General Director of ICOMOS International.

ICOMOS' role

Functioning as an advisory body to the World Heritage Committee, ICOMOS offers guidance and puts forth recommendations concerning all the matters associated with cultural and mixed heritage. This includes aspects such as the inscription and ongoing assessment of property conservation statuses. Subsequently, the World Heritage Committee engages in discussions and makes decisions based upon these recommendations.

For 2022 and 2023, the documents detailing ICOMOS' recommendations can be accessed through the links provided on the World Heritage Centre website:

  • The document containing Evaluations of Nominations for Cultural and Mixed Properties can be accessed here.
  • Similarly, the document containing the State of Conservation for Properties inscribed on the World Heritage List for 2022 and 2023 is available here.

You can follow the daily working sessions of this 45th session through a live broadcast on the World Heritage Centre's website (here). No registration is necessary to follow the broadcast, it is accessible to all, without limit of participants. During the debate sessions, participants do not have the opportunity to take the floor.
