The activities conducted by ICOMOS within the framework of the World Heritage Convention are carried out by its two World Heritage units: the evaluation unit and the advisory and monitoring unit. These are located at the ICOMOS International Secretariat in Paris.

Become an intern at ICOMOS

If you would like to apply for an internship at the World Heritage units, we suggest that you send your CV and a cover letter indicating your dates of availability by e-mail to secretariat[at]icomos.org.

Please note that due to the large number of requests we receive, we will only contact you if we wish to offer you an interview or an internship.

As an advisory body to the World Heritage Committee, ICOMOS uses its wide network of members in order to carry out its evaluation, monitoring and advisory activities. This network is made up of professionals qualified in the fields of conservation such as architects, archaeologists, urban planners, engineers, heritage managers, art historians, archivists, etc.


If you are interested in joining ICOMOS’ network of experts, you can contact your country’s National Committee or send your curriculum vitae to secretariat [at] icomos.org with details of your specialization. Your CV will be added to our expert database and we will contact you if we ever wish to call on your expertise for any of our World Heritage activities.

Are World Heritage nomination dossiers available for consultation?

  • Prior to inscription: No. The evaluation process of nominated properties for inscription on the World Heritage List is confidential until the World Heritage Committee makes a final decision at its annual session in June or July.
  • After inscription: Yes. Nomination dossiers of inscribed World Heritage properties are available for consultation at the ICOMOS Documentation Center or online on the World Heritage Centre website (When you consult a site on the World Heritage List, select the Documents tab).

Are the nomination dossiers that have been referred, deferred or non-inscribed by the World Heritage Committee available for consultation?

No. The nomination dossiers that have been referred, deferred or non-inscribed by the World Heritage Committee are archived by ICOMOS and are not available to the public.

What can I find in the nomination dossier of a World Heritage property?

 Nomination dossiers of inscribed properties contain the following components:

  • Documentation and information provided by the State Party :
    • Identification of the property
    • Description of the property
    • Justification for inscription
    • State of conservation and factors affecting the property
    • Protection and management
    • Monitoring
    • Contact information of responsible authorities
    • Signature on behalf of the State Party
  • Documentation:
    • Photographs, slides, videos, etc.
    • Copies of the site’s management plan, legislation and other legal instruments
    • Maps, architectural surveys, etc.
    • Bibliography
  • ICOMOS Evaluation

Can I consult ICOMOS’ annual recommendations on nominations?

 Yes. Every year, ICOMOS’ recommendations on new nominations are made public six weeks before the annual session of the World Heritage Committee. You can find the recommendations from 1999 to the present day by clicking here.

Are the state of conservation reports on World Heritage properties available for consultation?

Yes. You can see them here

Are the desk reviews and mission reports carried out by ICOMOS experts available for consultation? 

No. The desk reviews and mission reports carried out by ICOMOS experts are for internal use only. They are not available to the public.
