Climate justice and equitiy lie at the heart of climate action and should be the foundation of our response in the heritage sector. This toolkit provides an overview of the topic alongside some best-practice examples and suggested actions and activities for ICOMOS National and Scientific Committees. These include ways to increase inclusivity and participation, promote meaningful co-production and be more sustainable.

imate change has become one of the most significant and fastest growing threats to people and their cultural heritage worldwide. ICOMOS embraces a two-pronged approach to the issue that emphasizes both responding to the risks that climate change poses to cultural heritage and also championing heritage as a source of resilience and an asset to climate action, whose potential is unlocked through better conservation and management of the world’s tangible and intangible cultural resources.
In November 2021, ICOMOS adopted a new Triennial Scientific Plan 2021-24 – Cultural Heritage and Climate Action. This is the first to ambitiously attempt a coordinated effort amongst ALL ICOMOS members and Committees to focus on a single scientific issue.

As a contribution to the COP26 held in Glasgow, UK (November 2021) and to kickstart the Community of Practitioners on Water and Heritage, the Global Center on Adaptation’s Water Adaptation Community (WAC) and ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Water and Heritage (ISCWater) organised on 19 October 2021 an online dialogue among spiritual leaders, to discuss water-related spirituality as a source of inspiration and wisdom to cope with climate change impacts on the water cycle.
The European Cultural Heritage Green Paper “Putting Europe’s shared heritage at the heart of the European Green Deal”, which focuses on the role of cultural heritage in achieving the ambitions of the European Green Deal, is now available in French and Spanish.
