Connecting Practice Workshop | 7-8 February 2019

Logo ICOMOS IUCN ConnectingPracticeA workshop for the third phase of the Connecting Practice project that ICOMOS and IUCN are undertaking with The Christensen Fund’s support took place in ICOMOS headquarters near Paris, France on 7 and 8 February 2019. The Connecting Practice project is an initiative which aims to explore, learn about and create new methods of recognition and support for the interconnected character of the natural, cultural and social values of World Heritage Sites. Following the successful first two phases of Connecting Practice, the third phase continues to explore and to implement lessons learned into practical interventions and new mechanisms for achieving positive results for agricultural and biocultural practices.

Photo heritage4generations FCBKLast 18 April, on International Day on Monuments and Sites, we celebrated Heritage for generations.

The Emerging Professionals Working Group coordinated the event in a spirit of intergenerational exchanges to safeguard and promote heritage. Activities were aimed at fostering fruitful intergenerational dialogue. These included, but were not limited to: conferences, training sessions, roundtables, poster campaigns, evenings with question and answer games between younger and older members professionals and non-professionals, interactive tours of heritage and other kind of sites.

6 months after D-day, we can say that the results are positive: there were 117 events in 50 countries.

ICIPconfICIP (the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Interpretation and Presentation) very much looks forward to welcoming participants to the 2018 conference: ‘Critical issues in Heritage Interpretation and Sustainable Tourism’, taking place in Florence, 23-25 October 2018.

However, please note as a matter of importance that, as of today, this conference is now managed solely by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), which is the parent organisation of ICIP.

San Jose a Spanish galleon lost in Colombian waters in 1708

Following decades of extensive searches, the San Jose, heralded as the ‘holy grail’ of shipwrecks, was discovered in 2015. Subsequent underwater surveys revealed strong evidence supporting the claim that the wreck of the Spanish galleon had been located. In April of this year calls for interest in the project to recover the wreck’s cultural material were sent to various heritage bodies, including ICOMOS.
