          3. Round table on Invisible heritage with Héritage Montréal (French only)

What? Antoine de Saint-Exupéry said that the essential is invisible to the eye. Since one of Heritage Montréal's missions is to raise awareness, we propose to address the issue of invisible heritage, which we do not know how to see or do not want to see. The notion of invisible heritage also includes that which is forgotten, whether it is remarkable or not. The unrecognised heritage of entire episodes of our history sometimes remains to be brought to light.

The conference will begin with a presentation of the theme by Dinu Bumbaru, Director of Policy at Héritage Montréal. He will present Mount Royal, whose so-called natural forest hides a value that is more democratic than ecological. A panel discussion will follow with our guests:
- Bernard Vallée: History and heritage animator at Montréal Explorations, former member of the Conseil du patrimoine de Montréal (2012-2018) and the Commission de toponymie (1987-1995).
- Marie Dina Salvione: Lecturer in modern architecture and heritage; project manager at the Institut du nouveau monde and member of the Heritage and Planning Committee of Héritage Montréal.
- Frantz Voltaire: Writer (A Brief History of Black Communities in Canada, 2007) and director (Les chemins de la mémoire, 2002 - NFB award), he was a member of the Conseil des arts de Montréal, founding president in 1983 of CIDIHCA, a Haitian and Caribbean organization in Montreal, and publisher of the CIDIHCA publishing house.

India

This year, ICOMOS India organise several events to celebrate the International Day for Monuments and Sites, as:

          1. Culture as an Idea and Reality: from Cultivation of the Soul to Contemporary Cosmology

What? An International dialogue between America, Europe, and Asia aims to emphasize the significance of “Culture, Heritage, Identity, Multifunctionality and Interconnectedness”—a reflection to talk about sharing and interfacing the inherent meanings and experiential human values on which each Nation/Cultural realm must build cultural diplomacies and policies and also relations with other countries. Marcus Cicero’s idea of culture as “the philosophy of cultivation of the soul” is more vital to the contemporary idea of culture as cosmology (including mythology and the worldviews). Paul Schehfer’s (2020) has rightly visioned that “Without a much better understanding of all the diverse cultures in the world, it is difficult to see how the world can ever become a more secure, harmonious, and peaceful place for all people, cultures, and countries”. Through the cultural civility and heritage revitalization we would be able to make the humanised world ‘truthful, blissful and beautiful’ (Satyam, Shivam, Sundaram, as provoked in Indian metaphysics).

This International Webinar aims to analyze all the major conditions and potentials for humanizing and harmonizing the development of communities, resulting to enhance Global peace and happiness. Its purpose is to promote deeper understanding and mass awakening to realize and activate the individual dignity, cultural civility and social responsibility through the path of ‘Shared Cultures, Shared Heritage, Shared Responsibility’. The art of co-sharing presupposes that every person is able to research, awaken, understand and communicate their cultural experiences for the development of humanity.

Ireland

Title of the event: The Diamond War Memorial, Derry-Londonderry, Northern Ireland

What? Following the publication of ‘Other Stories’, an ICOMOS Ireland research project of case studies to reflect the principles of the Council of Europe’s FARO Convention, we showcase one of the stories in a short video presentation. It illustrates the importance of community involvement in researching and re-imagining a war memorial. Erected in 1927 this monument was always thought to relate only to the Protestant community and was a contentious monument at the centre of the City of Londonderry attracting vandalism. However, through research on the inscribed names, it is now known that it is equally commemorative of the Catholic community – all of whom died in the Great War of 1914-18. It is now revered and honoured by both communities in the spirit of the FARO Convention and after conservation has become a beacon of mutual respect and cooperation.

Malaysia

Title of the event: Complex Pasts: Diverse Futures | Malaysian "New Villages"

What? The New Villages progeny dates back to the concentration camps of the late 19th Century 2nd Boer War; a military tactic used to deprive the enemy of the support of the sympathetic population. The concept was replicated by military authorities in various places. None of these camps/secured villages continued till this day except as museum sites. The Malayan New Villages, however, had evolved and are today either absorbed by the nearby urban centres or had developed into fairly important centres of population, economic activities, and/or cultural depositories of the local inhabitants. While most of the New Village population were and are of Chinese origins, there were and still have substantial non-Chinese inhabitants. Moderated by Faisal Abdul Rahman, the session will look into the background of Malaysian New Villages and the possibilities of having them listed as our National Heritage.

Netherlands

Title of the event: “WHAT? WATER! Climate change and country houses”

What? When it comes to climate change and water, heritage is barely in the picture. An important reason is that the heritage and water world do not know each other sufficiently. Institutional, political and especially when it comes to research and science, there is little common ground. ICOMOS Netherlands and the Dutch Castle Foundation want to change this and show the important role heritage can play in sustainable solutions. Innovative adjustments have already been made at various country estates. Join the conversation and be inspired.

Contribution to participate is € 10. Students can register free of charge. After the symposium you will receive a video link to the recording of the livestream and a summary of the symposium. Note for international participants: Please note that the symposium will be held in Dutch. After the symposium we will send all attendees a video link of the live stream with subtitles in English and an abstract also in English.

On the occasion of the 2021 edition of the International Day for Monuments and Sites, ICOMOS Peru would like to propose three events align with three specific SDGs, as:

          1. SDG 5: Monumento de la Batalla alto de la Alianza

What? Poster SDG 5 : Gender equality and the Battle of Alto de la Alianza. The Monument built in memory of the fallen in the Battle of Alto de la Alianza (1880) is also a reminder of the self-sacrificing and transcendental role of women's active participation in every stage of Peruvian history. The revaluation of their participation is a current task on the agenda of Peruvian scientific research.

Philippines

Title of the event: Diverse Pasts, Complex Futures | A talk that explores the creation, selection, and preservation of heritage through the kalesa study and the jeepney

What? Urban historian Dr. Michael Pante discusses the evolution of the carruaje in pre-War Manila. In the last century, it was  perceived as a relic from an “unmodern” past that must give way to newer, safer transportation forms. Today it survives primarily for tourists who seek a nostalgic experience, or perhaps an incomplete interpretation/presentation of the Walled City and other historic districts.
What lessons on heritage declaration and preservation might one draw by studying the case of the kalesa and the jeepney, currently absent from the Philippine Registry of Cultural Property?  What insights might be applied to contemporary vernacular architecture, especially those of lower-income Filipinos? What role do heritage managers and cultural workers play in identifying what should be preserved and ensuring that cultural properties, especially those heavily used and meaningful to marginalized communities, endure into the future?

Poland

Title of the event: The Week for Heritage

What? Foundation for the Preservation of Historic and Natural Monuments will celebrate International Day for Monuments and Sites. On this occasion, we are organizing for the fifth time in Poland “The Week for Heritage”. During this week monuments which are usually closed and inaccessible for guests will be open. Owners of various monuments will wait for the visitors as part of the subproject “Heart in the Monument” on selected days and hours.

There will be a possibility to get to know the history of the participating monuments, take advantage of the attractions, have conversations with owners and talk with them about successes, plans and the biggest challenges. The places to which we would like to invite you are surrounded by nature  which makes them extremely charming and calm, especially on those beautiful April days. You will meet there kind people with a great passion for renovating their treasures. That is the reason why this year we have decided to complement the name of the project in words “Heart in the Monument”.

The aim of our event is to mobilize the potential of the place and architecture, which has been expressed by the owners with our advice and support. “The Week for Heritage” is also our earnest appeal for donations to help us renovate “witnesses of history”. They will be used for the most urgent renovations. Every cent is not only a chance for the second life of decaying objects but, what is also important, solidarity with the mission of our foundation which is to save from oblivion souvenirs of the past.

Singapore

Title of the event: Structure, Sanitation, and Social Engineering: Iron Markets in Hong Kong and Singapore during the late 19th century

What? An online Webinar via Facebook Live

By positioning Town Market and Central Market in Singapore and Hong Kong respectively as public health spaces, this talk will delve into three aspects pertinent in the transplantation of the modern European market into Asian colonial contexts and attempt to answer why iron construction was featured prominently in market construction during this period. Firstly, by understanding the associations of tropical climate and the specificities of geographical locations of the markets to establish a link between environment and building materials. Secondly, by foregrounding the significance of sanitary professionals and municipal engineers as key proponents of the colonial urban environment rather than architects; and lastly, by analysing how changes in sanitary and social theories and the shift from miasmic and contagion theories to the demonstration of microbial germs translated unevenly into architectural forms and functions. By way of addressing this year’s WHD theme, “Complex Pasts: Diverse Futures”, ICOMOS Singapore posit how understanding the factors underpinning the construction of these historic markets could generate more robust discussions, interpretations, and conservation approaches.

Slovenia

Title of the event: Complex Pasts, Diverse Futures | The multifaceted nature of cultural heritage and heritage communities

What? A Virtual Roundtable about The multifaceted nature of cultural heritage and heritage communities
The successful preservation of movable and immovable cultural heritage is the result of numerous researches, diverse knowledge, personal experience and cooperation, because the path to the right answers is not always one or easy. Collaboration is necessary, because we are not isolated in preserving the multifaceted heritage, but always in contact and relationship with others, with the community and / or the ( heritage ) communities.
This year's umbrella theme of ICOMOS' International Day of Monuments and Sites, which we celebrate every year on 18 April, is "Complex Pasts, Diverse Futures". In Slovenia this year, we focused on the role of communities and heritage communities in relation to immovable cultural heritage and its renovation. The multifaceted nature of heritage and heritage communities will first be explored with a brief outline of the role of communities in the preservation of immovable heritage, in particular the most modern views and professional bases of policy in this field, followed by the discussion of the concepts of "community" and "heritage community". After a brief presentation of the panellists, there will be more time for lively conversation among both the participants and the audience.
We invite you to join us for an event designed to introduce the professional community and, more importantly, the general public to an important perspective on heritage conservation/preservation - the role of community.
          Key Speakers:
- Nataša Kolenc, architect-conservator, project manager for the revitalization of Rihemberk Castle in the Municipality of Nova Gorica

Spain

Three major events we prepared in Spain for the International Day for Monuments and Sites, as:

          1. Collaborative heritage - Generating accessible content in the Wikipedia environment.

What? In the framework of the International Day for Monuments and Sites, the first Collaborative Heritage edition will take place on 17 April 2021, an initiative promoted by ICOMOS-Spain and Wikimedia Spain.
In response to the ICOMOS global call for greater inclusion and recognition of diversity, the DIMS 2021 theme invites reflection, reinterpretation and re-examination of existing narratives. ICOMOS Spain wishes to explore access to these cultural heritage narratives through any device and will set up a permanent group for the creation, editing and translation of articles on cultural heritage in the world's largest free encyclopedia: Wikipedia.
Therefore, to start this initiative, this first day of editing is proposed, aiming to prepare or improve Wikipedia entries that include places, assets or cultural events, with the aim of highlighting a heritage that is little known and even unknown to the general public, contributing to making its value known (#DiscoveringHeritage).

10: 00 - 10: 15 h. (08: 00-08: 15 UTC): Introductory presentation by Mónica Luengo Añón, Vice-President of ICOMOS Spain.
10: 15 - 11: 00 h. (08: 15-09: 00 UTC): Introduction to editing on Wikipedia.

What? The CSIC, the CSIC Delegation in Andalusia and Extremadura and more specifically the School of Arab Studies (EEA), wish to join in the celebration with a series of activities under the thematic heading proposed by ICOMOS for this year "Complex pasts: diverse futures", sharing the idea that "the conservation of cultural heritage requires a critical examination of the past, just as its practice demands a foresight for the future...".
Due to the current health crisis, caused by COVID-19, the School of Arab Studies (EEA) has scheduled several activities that can be followed in person at the Casa del Chapiz, as well as online through its YouTube channel and various social networks (@eea_csic), on 18 April 2021 and in the days leading up to it.
The CSIC's heritage serves as an engine for achieving sustainable development, an action programmed by the United Nations in the last decade, as it has been doing with other activities. The School of Arab Studies recognises the need to focus on heritage that represents diverse cultures and communities (SDG10), aiming to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable (SDG11), to illustrate a more tolerant and peaceful future (SDG16).

United-States of America

Four events are represented by the National Committee of US/ICOMOS, as following:

          1. Intergenerational Conversation on Society and Heritage: Perspectives from Africa and the U.S.

What? Leveraging heritage for a better future is gaining prominence across national, continental and international discourses, as heritage is not simply a record of the past but a cultural process reflecting the social realities of today. What is the role of heritage in tackling societal challenges including equity, diversity and inclusion in and among communities? How should heritage be integrated into decision-making processes to ensure sustainable development at the local and regional levels? What is the relationship between broader societal forces and heritage?

The leaders of governments in Africa envisioned a future where the continent is free of conflict, poverty, human rights violations and disasters. The vision encapsulates the significance of heritage within the society in the seven aspirations of African Union Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want reflecting the desire for inclusion, equality and integration for everyone regardless of gender, ethnicity and age. To this end, heritage defines people’s identities and histories and helps to rebuild communities after disasters, create new shared understanding of the past, stimulate local development and create opportunities for a better future.

In the United States, recent national discussions and protests have spotlighted unresolved racial issues and inequalities that continue to divide the country. Exploring the issues, struggles and contributions of different communities in historic places are critical to charting a path toward national healing and an equitable future.

Who? The event is organized by ICOMOS EPWG representatives from the U.S. and the Africa region (Zoe Leung and Olufemi Adentunji), to support intergenerational exchanges critical to safeguarding and promoting heritage. The program will feature a conversation among established and emerging professionals in heritage preservation from the United States and African countries, moderated by a U.S. participant.

Venezuela

Title of the event: 18 de abril de 2021: Día Internacional de los Monumentos y Sitios: Pasados complejos: Futuros diversos

What?  Each year, on the occasion of the International Day for Monuments and Sites, ICOMOS proposes a theme for the celebrations and activities organised by its committees, members and partners. This year, 2021 will be dedicated to the theme "Complex past, diverse future". The motto represents an opportunity to highlight the complexity, diversity and contradictions that have accompanied the preservation of Venezuela's cultural heritage since antiquity.
The diversity of the Venezuelan cultural heritage is a reality, despite the fact that the valorisation that has been exercised on it has been inclined over time towards certain types of goods, leaving aside many others by categories, periods, users. The practical operation of favouring certain assets over others, for institutional, political, ideological, economic and socio-cultural interests, is something that was present from the first recognitions made of the Venezuelan heritage.
