ICOMOS, together with its Finnish National Committee, is issuing a Heritage Alert, to stop planned demolitions in the courtyard of the Government Palace in the heart of Helsinki’s historic center and to prevent the implementation of current design and planning proposals that do not respect its heritage values and legal protection.
ICOMOS is attending the United Nations Water Conference in New York from 22-24 March 2023 to contribute to new commitments, pledges and actions by governments and all stakeholders towards achieving SDG 6 and other water-related goals and targets. The conference is taking place at the UN Headquarters and will result in a summary of proceedings from the UNGA President that will feed into the 2023 session of the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF).

Call for application for the Strengthening Capacities of World Heritage Professionals for Cultural Sites in Central, Eastern, South Eastern Europe and Central Asia Regions
The State Tourism Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan and ICOMOS International, in collaboration with ICOMOS Azerbaijan, are organizing a Capacity Building programme for World Heritage Professionals in Central, Eastern, South Eastern Europe and Central Asia Regions. This programme aims to build a strong network of experts from the Central, Eastern, South Eastern Europe and Central Asia Regions that will assist the States Parties, the Advisory Bodies, and all World Heritage stakeholders in the effective implementation of the WHC.
In 1982, ICOMOS established 18 April as the International Day for Monuments and Sites (IDMS), followed by UNESCO adoption during its 22nd General Conference. Each year, ICOMOS proposes a theme for activities to be organised by its members and partners - and anyone who wants to join in marking the Day.
This year's IDMS features the following theme: HERITAGE CHANGES.
Following the issue of the call for tenders and the publication of the winning design in 2022, ICOMOS and the Pier Luigi Nervi Project Foundation (PLN) wish to again raise their serious concerns and will analyse the winning proposal in detail to demonstrate the heavy impact it will have on Nervi’s original structure, contradicting the announced intention to preserve its original values.
On 6 February 2023, two major earthquakes and their aftershocks struck Syria and Turkey.
ICOMOS expresses its condolences and sadness at the rapidly rising death toll and numbers of missing and injured, as well as the devastation inflicted on populations, in part already heavily tested by war in Syria, in difficult winter conditions. ICOMOS offers its assistance.
