Free online classes on African rock art

African rock art online unit ICOMOS HeritageHave you always wanted to learn more about African rock art?

E.patrimoines, an online platform with free online classes on tangible and intangible heritage, has recently launched a unit on African Rock Art.

The unit features 12 videos (in French) with various professionals. Learn from rock art specialists, historians, archaeologists and geographers!

In Africa, rock art studies are based on a plethora of research and benefit from new techniques. Digital and IT tools in particular may significantly improve our knowledge of rock art and published material on the subject. In the meantime, there is a renewed awareness of the protection and sustainable management of rock art sites.

The goal of this unit is to raise key questions and to equip students, researchers and heritage experts with methodological tools for dealing with research, conservation, protection and rock art site management issues on the African continent.

The creation of this unit was coordinated by two ICOMOS members, Geoffroy Heimlich, African rock art specialist and ICOMOS World Heritage Advisor for the Evaluation Unit, and Caroline Gaultier-Kurhan, Officer for African Museums and Heritage at the French Ministry of Culture. The unit also includes classes led by Gwenaëlle Bourdin, Director of the ICOMOS Evaluation Unit. It was made possible thanks to the support of the Francophone University Agency, the World Francophone e-University and the French Ministry of Culture.
