"Cultural heritage is exposed to numerous disasters resulting from natural hazards, such as earthquakes, floods, and cyclones, and increasingly from human-induced hazards, like arson, armed conflict and civil unrest. The great East Japan Tohuko Earthquake and Tsunami (2011); Thailand Floods (2011); Haiti, Chile and Christchurch earthquakes (2010); and recent civil unrests in Afghanistan, Libya, Egypt, Yemen and Syria have caused serious damage to tangible and intangible attributes of cultural heritage sites ranging from historic buildings, museums, historic settlements, as well as cultural landscapes. Undoubtedly, the frequency and intensity of some disasters has increased recently due to the impact of Global Climate Change, as well as social, economic and political changes. Considering these challenges, the ICOMOS Advisory Committee symposium in Beijing on “Reducing Risks to Cultural Heritage from Natural and Human-Caused Disasters” aimed to assess these risks and formulate policies, strategies and techniques for reducing risks to disasters, responding to emergencies and recovering from disasters."

As part of the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention, this symposium addressed the notion of serial properties with a transversal approach. The first part consisted in an epistemological discussion of the concept of landscape in Europe and France, followed by a reminder of the political and administrative framework of landscape heritage management. Second followed the stories of projects, commitments actors around property sets or extensive property recently enrolled and projects in France, border and
in neighboring countries.

Modern conservation No5Modern Conservation No. 5. Šekaric, Branka (ed.). Belgrade, ICOMOS Serbia, 2017, 313 p., illus.

"The fifth issue of “Modern Conservation” contains five articles in the first chapter while the chapter on Conservation Practice consists of 12 papers (see attached Contents).
Following an outstanding response to the interviews with Prof. Jukka Jokilehto, Prof. Todor Krestev, Dr. Stefano De Caro and Mihael Petzet in the previous issues, the fifth issue brings an interview with Prof. Wilfried Lipp, Austrian expert in conservation field, President of ICOMOS Austria and President of International Scientific Committee on Theory and Philosophy of Conservation and Restoration: Theophilos. The chapter International documents carries translations of five documents in the field of conservation, while the chapter Reviews carries four papers on the books and the events in the field.
The fifth issue of “Modern Conservation” continues with the tradition of publishing the articles of foreign experts whose contributions are in line with the concept of periodical, which advocates for the promotion of ethically-founded conservation practice and constructive dialogue between all participants in the protection system, with the basic idea of improving the discipline and enhancing concern and responsibility for preservation of heritage in our society."
