World Heritage and the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework

Paraty Ianashah Flickr CC BYAs a result of the reflection of the experts attending to the International Expert Workshop “Harnessing the power of World Heritage for a better future: World Heritage and the Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework”, jointly organized by the IUCN World Heritage Programme and the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) with its International Academy for Nature Conservation, that took place from 14 to18 November 2019 at Isle of Vilm (Germany) the World Heritage and the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework statement has been released.

The workshop' statement addresses how World Heritage can contribute to the Post-2020 GBF and includes some relevant observation on the linkages between Nature and Culture and their mutually beneficial roles.

Seeing the multiple levels of cooperation in interlinking natural and cultural heritage practices and among the Advisory Bodies to the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, the statement is a chance to make a stronger connection and support though World Heritage the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

Together with its partner organizations, IUCN, ICCROM and UNESCO World Heritage Centre, ICOMOS endorses the document and looks forward for future steps that would contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
