ICOMOS Webinar Series | SDGWG Webinar 3: Cultural Heritage and Environmental Resilience
The ICOMOS Sustainable Development Goals Working Group (SDGWG) is pleased to announce the third webinar of the SDGWG Webinar Series which will form part of the ICOMOS Webinar Series.
We are witnessing a historic time of transition in the global community of policy-makers, governments and activists, since the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, and the associated New Urban Agenda in 2016. The 2030 Agenda is an action plan of people, planet, prosperity and partnerships, to address the most pressing problems our world is facing today.
ICOMOS has also responded to this call. As a global non-governmental organization advising UNESCO and working to promote the conservation of cultural heritage sites, ICOMOS is closely engaged with the topic of sustainable development in recent years, having held major scientific events and issued policy documents to highlight the vital role of cultural heritage within the sustainable development process.
While ICOMOS’s involvement with the SDGs is grounded in Target 11.4, which aims to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage, numerous other relevant goals are also inherently connected to cultural heritage.
Details of the Webinar
The third webinar of ICOMOS SDGWG will present an approach to the intertwined relationship between cultural and natural resources and its importance in strengthening resilience amidst the threats of climate change.
The webinar will explain ICOMOS’ two-pronged approach, i.e. responding to the risks that climate change poses to cultural heritage, and championing heritage as a source of resilience and an asset to climate action (SDG 13). This potential is unlocked through better conservation, management and use of the world’s tangible and intangible cultural resources, including their contribution to sustainable water (SDG6) and energy (SDG7) management. It will also provide examples how practitioners tackle environmental resilience in their practice, both covering heritage on land and underwater.
The Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 will also be explained for the topic of SDG 14. The societal objective of understanding and valuing the ocean and how underwater cultural heritage can contribute to the long-term change in the way oceans are managed will be discussed.
A discussion of SDG 15 and the sustainable use of land and terrestrial ecosystems will further elaborate on the significance of a landscape perspective to challenges of urbanisation at heritage sites. It will also showcase the importance of community-led initiatives that apply local nature and culture-based knowledge systems to facilitate resilience and innovation.

This Webinar is an affiliated event of the Culture x Climate 2020. This is part of a virtual global forum for arts, culture and heritage-based climate action presented by the Climate Heritage Network.
It will be presented in English and will have Spanish translation.
