ICOMOS-UK Conference: Capability Brown, 9-11 September 2016

ICOMOS UK Capability Brown Conference 09092016 Prior Park BathThis major international conference celebrates the tercentenary of Capability Brown’s birth and will bring together world-renowned speakers to present Brown’s work in a global context.

Who? ICOMOS-UK Cultural Landscapes and Historic Gardens Committee

What? Organised by the Cultural Landscapes and Historic Gardens Committee of ICOMOS-UK in collaboration with the University of Bath, this major conference will be one of the highlights of the first-ever Capability Brown Festival, providing an international dimension to complement the UK’s national festival of events, openings, exhibitions and publications. Over the three-day conference, Brown’s impact and the perception of his work both at home and abroad will be explored. Evening receptions will be held at Prior Park and the Bath Assembly Rooms and conference tickets include a visit to the recently restored Brown landscape at Croome Court.

Tickets are £275 for ICOMOS members (£340 for non-members)

Pre and post conference tours of Brown’s landscapes are also being organised. Led by John Phibbs, the acknowledged authority on Brown’s work, these two complementary tours aim to shed light on, and celebrate, his mysterious achievement. Each will follow the kind of perambulation that Brown himself would have made on his annual visits to the places he was developing. The landscapes have been carefully chosen to represent his entire career and the varied range of landscapes he created. Thus the first tour ‘The Show Houses’, which precedes the ICOMOS-UK conference, will take in two of his great show places (Stowe and Blenheim); while the second tour, ‘The Great Estates’, will visit two more private landscapes south of Bath (Sherborne Castle and Milton Abbey). The tours can be booked separately by contacting info[at]inspirationevents.com
