ICOMOS Policy Guidance for Heritage and Development Actors now available in Portuguese

The Portuguese translation of the ICOMOS document Heritage and the Sustainable Development Goals: Policy Guidance for Heritage and Development Actors was officially launched on 20 April 2023 at the webinar and workshop organised by the ICOMOS Sustainable Development Goals Working Group (SDGWG), ICOMOS Portugal, Sustainable Culture and ISCTE - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa.

Through this Policy Guidance, ICOMOS advocates for heritage’s role in driving and enabling the achievement of all SDGs, beyond Target 11.4. The translations of this document and localised examples worldwide are the next step towards its implementation.

The translator of the original text, Karla Nunes Penna, member of ICOMOS Brazil, states: "The Policy Guidance is so important to all professionals working in implementing the SDGs that I felt motivated to translate it into Portuguese. Making it accessible to stakeholders in Portuguese-speaking countries is a way to fulfil the right to access quality training in our own language."


The workshop at ISCTE was co-organised by Soraya Genin, President of ICOMOS Portugal, who translated the Brazilian Portuguese text into Portuguese from Portugal. She believes that the translation will improve collaboration between different Portuguese-speaking countries.


Flavio Carsalade, President of ICOMOS Brazil, underlines that the document in Portuguese will not only reach Brazil ICOMOS members, but more than 214 million Portuguese speakers in Brazil and beyond.


Through further planned-translations, the SDGWG hopes to further spread the important message of the holistic role heritage plays in support of achieving the SDGs ambitions.
