ICOMOS represented at the 2022 UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon

20220627 161525From 27 June to 1 July 2022, the second United Nations Conference on the Ocean took place in Lisbon, which was co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Portugal.
The aim of the event was to mobilise the international community to commit to finding sustainable solutions for the conservation, protection and responsible use of marine resources, according to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14 of the Agenda2030.

The conference theme was "Scaling up Ocean Action Based on Science and Innovation for the Implementation of Goal 14: Stocktaking, Partnerships and Solutions".

In support of this call for action, ICOMOS attended this conference represented by Elena Perez-Alvaro, member of the International Committee on the Underwater Cultural Heritage (ICUCH) and  published a statement illustrating some of the ways in which cultural heritage can contribute to the success of this call for action. This statement was done by the International Committee on the Underwater Cultural Heritage (ICUCH), supported by ICOMOS International Committee on Water and Heritage (ISCWater) and the ICOMOS Sustainable Development Goals Working Group.

ICOMOS recognises the role of cultural heritage in contributing to the success of the identified outcomes of the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and advocates for the "potential of heritage to protect biocultural diversity and ensure the sustainable use of the oceans, seas and marine resources" (ICOMOS, 2021).

Read the full statement presented by Dr. Christopher Underwood, President of ICOMOS-ICUCH and supported by Honorary Vice President Henk van Schaik of ICOMOS-ISCWater.
