A reminder that People-Centred Approaches should be at the heart of cultural heritage management
At the end of 2020, ICOMOS made the resolution that People-Centred Approaches to Cultural Heritage were to be promoted so that the diverse cultural, environmental, and socio-economic concerns of people and communities are taken into account when local, national and international heritage policies and practices are developed.
The Resolution comes at a key moment in time as ICOMOS considers its work in close conjunction to the UN2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and while the global crisis of COVID-19 has highlighted the vulnerability of human connections and access to places.
The resolution was spearheaded by the ICOMOS Our Common Dignity Rights-based Approaches Working Group, alongside the Sustainable Development Goals Working Group, Climate Change and Heritage Working Group, Emerging Professionals Working Group, Iraq/ Syria Working Group, with the support of the ICOMOS Advisory Committee, of ICOMOS Canada, ICOMOS Turkey, ICOMOS Ireland, ICOMOS Norway, ICOMOS New Zealand, ICOMOS Estonia, ICOMOS South Africa, ICOMOS Hellenic, US/ICOMOS and ICOMOS Spain National Committees, the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Vernacular Architecture (CIAV), ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Theory and Philosophy of Conservation and Restoration (Theophilos), and 88 members.
