Rights-Based Approaches Working Group at ICOMOS 2019 AGA, Marrakesh
The Rights-Based Approaches working group attended and contributed to the ICOMOS Annual General Assembly in Marrakesh, Morocco, last October.
OCD-RBA group contributed to the annual global gathering of heritage experts on many levels:
- OCD-RBA knowledge-café brought together 35 experts to discuss the RBA Toolkit for Rural Heritage. Presentations by Ave Paulus (Estonia), Gurmeet Rai (India) and Grainne Shaffrey (Ireland) focused on successful and unsuccessful practice and opened up a lively discussion. The main debate was on how ICOMOS members might endorse rights issues in heritage management.
- The Advisory committee adopted the draft Recommendation prepared by OCD-RBA WG to encourage and support the States Parties in their adoption and application of good practices of rights-based approaches for the identification, evaluation, management and protection of cultural heritage sites and properties, and include site managers, local and regional governments, local communities, indigenous peoples, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other interested parties and partners in the processes.
- OCD-RBA wg promoted the cooperation with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Climate Change working group to better communicate on common ideas.
