ICOMOS and ALIPH sign Memorandum of Understanding

ALIPH ICOMOS MOU 20220131On the occasion of the 2nd ALIPH Donors’ and Partners’ Conference, ICOMOS President Teresa Patrício and ALIPH Executive Director Valéry Freland signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the Louvre on 31 January 2022. This MOU is a commitment to strengthen our shared efforts for the protection of heritage, particularly in conflict and post-conflict areas.

ICOMOS and ALIPH, the International alliance for the protection of heritage in conflict areas, have already been collaborating on several initiatives, including an upcoming capacity building workshop on creating a national heritage inventory for the Democratic Republic of Congo.

ICOMOS President Teresa Patrício and Secretary General Mario Santana Quintero will be training heritage professionals in Kinshasa and Kongo Central this spring, and Dr Patricio travelled to Kinshasa in December 2021 to prepare the workshop, which will be carried out in collaboration with the National Advisory Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict (CCN) of the DRC. All over the world, national heritage services are establishing national cultural heritage inventories in view of ensuring its protection and enhancement, as well as its transmission to future generations. The establishment of an inventory focusing on tangible heritage will provide the basic tool for all heritage management in the DRC and would pave the way for its national protection, conservation, valorisation and promotion.

This renewed collaboration will enable ICOMOS and ALIPH, among other initiatives, to implement joint protection and conservation projects in the field of cultural heritage. Thanks to ICOMOS’ network of 11 000 members, the organisations will continue to exchange information and knowledge about heritage in conflict or post-conflict zones to ensure their protection and rehabilitation.
