La restauration du pavillon du Parc Rockcliffe à Ottawa, Ont. CanadaProjet terminé en 1998 Cette propriété a appartenu à la Ville d'Ottawa jusqu'en 1995 alors que les titres ont été transférés à la Commission de la capitale nationale (NCC). Le pavillon du Parc Rockcliffe fut construit en 1917 et était en très mauvais état: la couverture en bardeaux d'asphalte était rendue à la fin de sa vie utile, la structure du toit était pourrie à de nombreux endroits et plusieurs éléments architecturaux en ciment étaient très détériorés. La CCN a entrepris les travaux de restauration de ce pavillon en 1997. Les matériaux et les palettes de couleurs originales ont été identifiés à la suite d'études historiques et d'investigations sur le site. Les couleurs originales dans des tons de vert furent restituées. Les éléments endommagés en béton moulé et coulé en place furent restaurés. La couverture originale était en bardeaux de bois et a retrouvé son apparence originale. Ce joli pavilion était très populaire auprès des jeunes couples qui venaient s'y faire photographier après leur marriage. Les travaux de restauration ayant contribué à améliorer son apparence, il continuera certainement d'apparaître sur des photos de marriage pendant de nombreuses années. Le pavillon original avait été conçu avec des toilettes publiques en sous-sol. Elles sont toujours là. La topographie du terrain ne permettant pas de les rendres accessibles universellement, il fut décidé de construire un nouveau pavillon de toilettes conçu en fonction des normes contemporaines d'accessibilité. Pour qu'il s'intègre bien dans l'environnement du parc, il fut décidé que son architecture serait basée sur le vocabulaire architectural du pavillon principal, mais que ses détails seraient résolument contemporains, ne laissant aucun doute sur la période de sa construction. Les plans furent préparés en 1999 et il fut construit en 2002. ********** Restoration of the Rockcliffe Park Pavilion, Ottawa, Ont. CanadaProject completed in 1998 This property belonged to the City of Ottawa until 1995 when title was transfered to the National Capital Commission (NCC). The Rockcliffe Park Pavilion was built in 1917 and was in urgent need of repais: the asphalt shingle roof was at the end of its useful life, the roof structure was rotted at various locations and some of the concrete architectural work was badly deteriorated. The NCC began the restoration work of this pavilion during 1997. Original materials and color schemes were identified through historical studies and on-site investigations. The original color scheme in shades of green was reinstated. The cast and the poured-in-place damaged concrete elements were restored. The roof was re-shingled with wood as per its original appearance. This fine pavilion was quite popular with young couples who made arrangements to have their wedding photographs taken on this site. Because of its fine appearance after restoration, it will certainly continue to appear in many wedding pictures for years to come. The original pavilion was designed with public washrooms in the basement. They are still there. The site topography did not permit to make them universally accessible and it was decided to build a new public washrooms pavilion designed according to contemporary universal accessibility standards. In order to ensure its integration into the park's environment, it was decided that its architecture would be based on the architectural vocabulary of the main pavilion, but that its details would be contemporary, thus leaving no doubt on the period of its construction. The plans were prepared during 1999 and it was built during 2002.
