Ottawa is the capital of Canada and a municipality within the Province
of Ontario. Located in the Ottawa Valley in the eastern portion
of Southern Ontario, the city lies on the southern banks of the
Ottawa River, a major waterway forming the local boundary between
the Provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The 2006 Census recorded the
population at over 812,000, making it the fourth largest municipality
in the country and second largest in Ontario. Connected by several
bridges to its Quebec neighbour, the City of Gatineau on the northern
shores of the Ottawa River, the two cities had a combined 2006 population
of over 1,130,000, making it the country's fourth largest metropolitan
area.

The Old Ottawa City Hall built in 1958 and its 1988 modern extention
by Canadian Architect Moshe Safdie. The building is located at 111
Sussex Drive. In 1999 offices were rented out to the Department
of Foreign Affairs, which is based nearby, and this mostly filled
the building.
On January 1, 2001, a new single-tier City of Ottawa was created
to replace the Regional Municipality of Ottawa Carleton. It was
decided that the new city would be based at the RMOC Building. In
2003 the Old City Hall was sold to the Federal Public Works department.
Today the building mainly houses Foreign Affairs employees.

The American embassy is located on Sussex Drive, next to the Byward
Market. It opened in 1999.

The Courtyards located just behind Sussex Drive are a fun place
to visit. The tin façade of an historic building that was
demolished years ago was saved and hung on the wall of an existing
building.
