About Newport
Newport is located at the southern end of Aquidneck Island, the largest island in Narragansett Bay. While Native people had been in the area for at least 5,000 years, the first English settlers arrived on Aquidneck Island in 1639, having been driven out of Boston for their religious beliefs.  Among the religious groups attracted to this haven were Quakers and Jews.

By the 1760s Newport had emerged as one of the five leading ports in colonial North America, along with Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Charleston. The economic growth spurred a building boom which included hundreds of houses and many of the internationally important landmarks that survive today, such as Trinity Church, the Colony House, Redwood Library, and the Brick Market (now home to the Museum of Newport History).

Following a long period of economic depression after the American Revolution, Newport began reinventing itself as a summer resort beginning in the mid-19th century.  First, rich planters from Charleston and Savannah built lavish retreats to escape the hot humid southern summers.  By the end of the 19th century, America's Gilded Age, wealthy industrialists had turned Newport into the summer social capital of the United States, entertaining lavishly in their "cottages" which lined fashionable Bellevue Avenue and its surroundings.  Today, both the colonial seaport era and the Gilded Age are represented by numerous well-preserved architectural splendors.  Newport also ranks as one of the top yachting spots in the world and is a popular tourist destination.

TRAVEL
Newport is located on the southern tip of Aquidneck Island, 30 miles south of Providence, Rhode Island, 70 miles south of Boston, Massachusetts, and 180 miles west-northwest of New York City.  The conference hotel (Newport Marriott) is marked by a RED START on the maps at right.

The closest airport is T.F. Green State Airport in Providence; the airport code is PVD.  Newport is approximately 30 miles south of the airport.  For those staying at the Newport Marriott (the conference hotel), Cozy Cab Limousine/Shuttle Service provides shuttle-van and cab service to and from the airport. Reservations are required only for the return trip from the hotel. Shuttle fare is $20 per person, one way; taxi fare is $80 (prices subject to change). The shuttle deposits passengers at the Visitor Transportation Center which is directly adjacent to the Newport Marriott Hotel.

International arrivals may transfer at Boston's Logan Airport (70 miles north of Newport) or New York City's J.F. Kennedy International Airport (180 miles west of Newport) to a flight to Providence.

The city also can be reached by Amtrak Train, although early reservations are usually needed.

By car, Newport is located approximately 20 miles south of Interstate 95 as it crosses through Rhode Island.

From the Providence airport, take I-95 South to Route 4 South (Exit 9) to Route 138 East.  Route 138 crosses the Jamestown Verrazanno Bridge onto Aquidneck Island and enters Newport just north of the conference hotel.  Turn right onto Farewell Avenue, then right onto America's Cup Avenue and the Newport Marriott will be on your right.

From points north of Providence (the Boston area), either take I-95 South past Providence, Rhode Island and follow the directions above or take Route 123 South to Route 24 to Route 114, which runs the length of Aquidneck Island to Newport at the southern tip.

From the south and west (New York City area), take I-95 North across Connecticut.  Upon entering Rhode Island, look for signs to Route 138.  Take Route 138 East, cross the Newport Bridge, and turn right onto America's Cup Avenue.  The Newport Marriott will be on your right.

WEATHER
In late April, Newport temperatures average around a high of 60°F (15°C) and a low of 45°F (7°C).  Therefore, while the daytime can be pleasant, the evenings may be quite cool.  In fact, the breeze off the harbor can be downright cold at times.

While flowers should be in bloom, a late Spring snowfall is not unheard of in New England!
