Historic New Harmony , Indiana

New Harmony is an experience like no other.  A community that began two hundred years ahead of its time, New Harmony was first a spiritual sanctuary that later became a haven for scientist, scholars, and educators who sought equality in communal living.  Chosen as one of America’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, New Harmony is a National Historic Landmark.  Guests can tour historic 19th century structures important to each of the town’s two communal societies, as well as significant buildings designed by noted 20th century architects such as Richard Meier and Phillip Johnson.

Tours begin at the striking Atheneum/Visitor’s Center on the banks of the Wabash River and can be customized for large groups.  Travelers can stay at the beautiful New Harmony Inn, which boasts 90 hotel rooms, modern conference facilities, and several guest houses.  B&Bs and a major state park have additional overnight facilities, including camping.  Fine dining is available at the award-winning Red Geranium Restaurant or the Cooper House Kitchen and casual dining options exist throughout town.  A variety of gift, antique, and book stores, as well as a number of art galleries, occupy turn of the century commercial buildings in downtown.  Lush gardens, beautiful landscapes, and art installations are around every corner.  Tour information is available at www.newharmony.org or by calling 800.231.2168.

In 2004, Historic New Harmony hosted a US/ICOMOS International Intern to assist them with preparatory research and documentation for their proposed World Heritage nomination.

Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area

Tennessee, the gateway to the heart of the Confederacy, is an area rich in sites, buildings, landscapes, and documented sources that tell the stories of the American Civil War and Reconstruction. Geographic location, along with strategic river and rail routes, productive farmlands, and industrial sites made the state a crucial prize fought for by both armies. Every county in Tennessee was affected by the destruction of the land, loss of life, bitter divisions within families and communities, and political and social turmoil of the war years and the following decades. The Tennessee Civil War Heritage Area focuses on the late antebellum period (from ca. 1850), military activity, the home front experience, Reconstruction, and the enduring legacy of this watershed of history.
