PARTICIPATING IN THE GLOBAL PRESERVATION COMMUNITY

"Participating in the Global Preservation Community" was one of the eleven focus areas for the Preserve America Summit, which was held October 2006 in New Orleans. The Summit marked the 40th anniversary of the passage of the National Historic Preservation Act, reviewed the major components of the national historic preservation program, and resulted in recommendations designed to advance historic preservation programs and national and international policy related to heritage conservation. The "Global Community" expert panel, co-chaired by USDA and US/ICOMOS, met prior to the Summit in the US/ICOMOS Conference Room on August 31 and September 1, 2006 to generate recommendations for presentation at the Preserve America Summit in New Orleans, where all expert panels convened October 18-20 to make final recommendations.

The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation presented the final recommendations to the President and First Lady in September 2007 (see the PRESS RELEASE HERE).  As the recommendations include a call to "optimize U.S. participation in the international preservation arena by improving information exchange and facilitating U.S. participation in international preservation activities," US/ICOMOS is making this PreserveAmerica Summit recommendation the focus of the 11th US/ICOMOS International Symposium, to be held May 28-31, 2008 in Washington, DC.
