In conjunction with the Winter meeting of the US/ICOMOS Board of Trustees, a reception was held in honor of Chair Emerita Ann Webster Smith, who was recognized at the 15th ICOMOS General Assembly in Xi’an, China by being awarded the 2005 Gazzola Prize.  (Read more about US/ICOMOS at the ICOMOS General Assembly). The National Trust for Historic Preservation graciously offered the Board Room of the Washington, DC headquarters for this event.  Nearly 100 people, including family, friends, US/ICOMOS members, and other long-standing colleagues of Ms. Smith, attended the reception.

John Fowler (Chair, US/ICOMOS Board of Trustees) and Gustavo Araoz (US/ICOMOS Executive Director) provided remarks before presenting Ms. Smith with the medal she was awarded in China.  Jonathan Stevens also read a letter of congratulations from Senator Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island.  Senator Chafee's office, along with the Newport World Heritage Committee, has been working closely with US/ICOMOS to compile a World Heritage nomination for Newport and hosted the 9th US/ICOMOS Symposium "From World Heritage to Your Heritage" in Newport April 19-23, 2006.
