Host a US/ICOMOS International Intern

The US/ICOMOS International Intern Exchange Program provides preservation organizations with an exciting opportunity to contribute to and benefit from cross-cultural exchange in the preservation field.

If you are interested in hosting a preservation intern through this program, please review the Program Overview, then send US/ICOMOS the information requested below by January 31, 2008.

Schedule for Summer Internships*

 The program schedule for 2008 is set as follows
(subject to minor variations in accordance with host organization schedules)

  •  January 31, 2008: Intern applications due to US/ICOMOS

  •  March 30, 2008:  Intern placement decisions made

  •  May 27 - 31, 2008:  Intern orientation in Washington, DC (coinciding with the 2008 US/ICOMOS International Symposium)

  •  May 27, 2008:  Celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the US/ICOMOS International Exchange Program (Washington, DC)

  •  June 1 - August 19, 2008:  Internship at their host organization

  •  August 19, 2008:  Summer Interns return to Washington, DC for final program; Fall interns arrive for orientation

  •  August 21, 2008:  International Intern Program Reception in Washington, DC

  •  August 23, 2008:  Summer interns return home; Fall interns travel to their host organizations

U.S. Host Organizations

U.S. host organizations are asked to contribute funding to US/ICOMOS to help support the program.  In return, US/ICOMOS handles all of the recruiting for and review of applicants, and provides an orientation and final program for all interns in Washington, DC.  In addition, US/ICOMOS handles the distribution of all stipend payments and provides supplemental travel and medical insurance for interns for the entire duration of the internship, from orientation through the final program.

  •  Name and category of proposed intern project

  •  Summary description of the proposed intern project

    • Will the project involve office, fieldwork, or both?

    • Will the intern be working largely alone or in a group?

    • What will the final product be (drawings, report, brochure, etc.)?

  •  Technical skills the intern will need to complete the project

  •  Logistical information

    • Will subsidized or free housing be provided?

    • Will you pay for airfare for the intern from Washington, DC to your city/town/site?

Non-U.S. Host Organizations

Preservation organizations in outside the United States interested in hosting a US/ICOMOS intern are asked to contribute to the stipend and housing of interns.  In some cases, US/ICOMOS is able to raise outside funds to help support the intern and the non-U.S. host organization.  If interested, please send the following information to US/ICOMOS by mail or email.

  •  Name and category of proposed intern project

  •  Summary description of the proposed intern project

    • Will the project involve office, fieldwork, or both?

    • Will the intern be working largely alone or in a group?

  •  Technical skills the intern will need to complete the project

  •  Logistical information

    • Will subsidized or free housing be provided?

    • Will you be able to pay a stipend for the U.S. Intern?

Placements are based on the best match of the applicant's skills and experience and the host organization's needs.
