The summer interns arrived in Washington, DC on May 30 and spent the week visiting with representatives from preservation agencies and organizations.  The interns left on June 3 to begin their internships and will return to Washington in late August for a final program and reception.

The interns stayed in a hotel in Washington's vibrant Dupont Circle neighborhood, within walking distance of shops and restaurants and an easy metro ride away from the many cultural attractions of our nation's capital.  Over the next several days, the interns had the opportunity to meet with representatives of numerous preservation organizations in Washington, take a variety of cultural tours and outings, and, importantly, get to know each other.

Orientation began on Wednesday, May 30 at the US/ICOMOS office, located in the National Building Museum.  Gustavo Araoz,US/ICOMOS Executive Director, welcomed the interns to Washington and provided an introduction to ICOMOS and US/ICOMOS.  Donald Jones, US/ICOMOS Director of Programs, gave described the International Exchange Program in detail and provided an overview of the week's agenda. Rebecca Miller (President, DC Preservation League) and Heather MacIntosh (Executive Director, Preservation Action) each gave descriptions of their organization's respective activities.

Following a catered lunch at the US/ICOMOS office, several business matters were concluded, such as distributing stipend checks to the interns who came from overseas and making copies of all relevant visa documents.  Following lunch, the interns traveled to the National Trust for Historic Preservatio, where Paul Edmondson, the National Trust's General Counsel provided an overview of their varied preservation programs and activities and Margaret Welsh led the group on a tour of the historic building that serves as the Trust headquarters. After a visit to the bank to cash stipend checks, the group reconvened at the hotel then traveled by metro to a welcome dinner at Thunder Grill in the main concourse of the historic Union Station.

On Thursday, the group met with Troy Thompson (former US/ICOMOS Intern to Lithuania), at LORD Cultural Resources, to learn about the role of the private sector in preservation projects, from policy to planning to rehabilitation and development, in the United States.  The interns then had the rest of the afternoon and evening on their own.  Following that discussion, the interns visited with two programs in the the National Park Service - the Office of International Affairs, which gave an overview of all NPS activities and particularly their extensive Volunteers in the Parks program, followed by an overview of the NPS National Heritage Areas Program by Brenda Barrett and Suzanne Copping (2006 US/ICOMOS Intern to Belgium).

On Friday, the interns met visited the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation in the Old Post Office Building.  John Fowler, Executive Director of the Advisory Council and Chairman of the US/ICOMOS Board of Trustees, described the role of the Federal Government in historic preservation in the United States.  The interns then traveled up into the clock tower for a view of Washington's monumental core followed by a lunch on the Sky Terrace of the Hotel Washington, overlooking the White House and Washington Monument grounds.
