"It was a wonderful experience and I am very thankful to have been given this opportunity to learn about conservation from an international point of view.'"

Susan Reynolds
2006 US/ICOMOS
Intern to ICCROM, Rome, Italy

This internship was funded by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation with additional support from private donors.

ICCROM, Rome, Italy

Susan Reynolds conducted research toward the development of a new ICCROM course on the use of appropriate structural engineering methods and practices in preservation projects.  Her main tasks were to determine if a true international need for such a course existed and, if it did, to make preliminary suggestions and plans for its development and implementation.  To this end, Susan conducted research on international trends in preservation engineering, compiled a database of people, organizations, and reference materials for the proposed course, created and deployed a questionnaire to gauge international interest and to understand regional needs, and designed a course outline.

The US/ICOMOS International Intern Exchange Program is funded by a variety sources.  Each of the host organizations in the U.S. contributed funds that cover a substantial portion of the costs for interns from overseas.  Grants from private foundations and individual donors supported the internships for U.S. preservationists traveling overseas, with additional support from some of the overseas host organizations.  The 2006 overseas internships were supported by the Keepers Fund for Historic Preservation, Marpat Foundation, Royal Oak Foundation, Samuel H. Kress Foundation, and contributions from numerous individuals.
