2003 US/ICOMOS Intern with the

National Park Service
Historic American Building Survey

The Woodlands
Philadelphia, PA, USA

Shalini Mahajan conducted her internship with the National Park Service's Historic American Building Survey.  Specifically, Shalini assisted with the documentation of The Woodlands, an late 18th-century mansion in Philadelphia owned by William Hamilton.

The Woodlands represents a presage to neo-classical architecture that became popular in high-style buildings in the early 19th century.  The stone structure includes monumental Tuscan portico, a preeminent neo-classical interior, and remains of extensive formal gardens overlooking the Schuylkill.

The plans Shalini helped produce include longitudinal sections, floor plans, and details of decorative relief.  While her internship was sponsored by the National Park Service's HABS/HAER program, the Woodlands documentation project as a whole is supported also by the Woodlands Cemetery Company of Philadelphia and the Woodlands Trust for Historic Preservation.

"This internship has reinforced my belief in the fact that historic architecture is indeed my forte and I do wish and consciously choose to be a part of it and help in its interpretation in today’s multidimensional, diverse and ever changing modernistic world."
