Matt Crawford in Slovakia

2003 US/ICOMOS Intern with

Academia Istropolitana Nova,
Svaty Jur, Slovakia

and

Regional Office, Slovak Monuments Board
Banska Stiavnica, Slovakia

Matt Crawford's internship consisted of two parts.  During the first six weeks he was hosted by the Academia Istropolitana Nova in the Built Heritage/Architectural Program, where he attended lectures and a week-long workshop devoted to a preservation plan for an ensemble of vernacular wooden churches in rural northeast Slovakia.  During the second half of the internship, he documented the town's Jewish cemetery, which dates from the late 19th through the early 20th century.

"The ICOMOS internship has been a very enriching experience....In addition to the compact Renaissance and Baroque core of the city, I became enthralled with the Soviet-Style monuments and buildings that dot the quarters outside the historic core, an interest that my Slovak hosts found strange indeed.
