What is ICOMOS?

 

 

ICOMOS, the International Council on Monuments and Sites, is a nongovernmental organization of professionals dedicated to the conservation of the world's historic monuments and sites.  It provides a forum for professional dialogue and a vehicle for the collection, evaluation, and dissemination of information on conservation principles, techniques, and policies.

Founded in 1965, following the international adoption of the Charter for the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Sites in Venice, ICOMOS has 7,000 members in over 100 countries.  Headquartered in Paris, ICOMOS is UNESCO's principal advisor in matters concerning the protection of monuments and sites.  With the World Conservation Union, ICOMOS counsels the World Heritage Committee an UNESCO on the nomination of sites to the World Heritage List.
