thumb WH2015 2

On 20 January 2015, ICOMOS invited the States Parties members of the World Heritage Committee and IUCN to participate in a meeting to discuss the changes that have been and will be undertaken in order to improve the efficiency and rigour of the advisory work carried out by ICOMOS in the context of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention (1972) as well as to propose mechanisms for an upstream and more cooperative dialogue with the States Parties regarding nominations to the World Heritage List.

This meeting represents the first step towards an open dialog between the States Parties members of the World Heritage Committee and the advisory bodies (ICOMOS & IUCN). The meeting benefitted of active participation and constructive questions were raised on the current evaluation procedure and on the proposed new evaluation processes. Comments and suggestions were made in order to enhance on the one hand, the relationship between States Parties and the advisory bodies regarding the evaluation process and on the other hand, to improve existing procedures and create new ones that would contribute to achieving better results when presenting nominations.

The meeting was well received and seen as the beginning of a fruitful dialog between the members of the World Heritage Committee and the advisory bodies.
