Membership information and application form

ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) is a non-government professional organisation formed in 1965. It is closely linked to UNESCO, with members in over 100 countries and its Secretariat in Paris. Members in these countries are formed into National Committees and participate in the General Assemblies of ICOMOS, which are held triennially. In Australia, members participate in a range of conservation activities, including promotion of good practice, site visits, training, conferences and meetings.

The Australian National Committee of ICOMOS (Australia ICOMOS) was formed in 1976. It elects an Executive Committee of 15 members which is responsible for carrying out national programs and participating in decisions of ICOMOS as an international organisation.

Australia ICOMOS acts as a national and international link between public authorities, institutions and individuals involved in the study and conservation of all places of cultural significance.

Aims & activities

ICOMOS is primarily concerned with the philosophy, terminology, methodology and techniques of conservation.

ICOMOS promotes expertise and the application of sound theory, methodology and scientific techniques in the conservation of cultural heritage. Australia ICOMOS organises several meetings, conferences and site visits each year in various parts of the country to which members, subscribers and the general public are invited.

It also conducts seminars and workshops on conservation issues and problems. Some of these have been directed towards training professionals and decision-makers involved in conservation issues at various levels of government.

The Burra Charter

Australia ICOMOS is responsible for drafting and updating/revising the Australia ICOMOS Charter for Places of Cultural Significance. Known as The Burra Charter, it is regarded as a nationally important document on conservation philosophy and methodology. The latest revision of the Charter occurred in 1999. The guidelines to the Charter are being revised. These guidelines explain in more detail the assessment of cultural significance, development of conservation policy and the writing of reports.

Membership

Presently, Australia ICOMOS members include a wide range of professional people, including administrators, planners, historians, educators, curators, archaeologists, architects, interpretation specialists, conservators and engineers.

Membership at both a national and international level is available through Australia ICOMOS, the national committee.

There are three categories for individuals:

There is also an INSTITUTIONAL MEMBER category, and Australia ICOMOS can grant honorary memberships according to the Honorary Membership Policy 2008.

Eligibility, benefits, application requirements and fees for the categories are explained following.

Change in membership category requires a formal request to Australia ICOMOS as different criteria and application requirements may apply.

Membership of Australia ICOMOS is based on the Australian financial year, 1 July to the 30 June (except for subscriptions which operate on a calendar year). New members applying within five months of the end of the financial year will be regarded as financial for the following year. Membership will lapse if fees are not paid within three months of the commencement of a new financial year. All benefits will then cease. International benefits for Full International Members are based on calendar years and are available to those eligible financial members of Australia ICOMOS at the start of that calendar year.

Fees are set by the Australia ICOMOS Executive and published on the web, in brochures and in the email news.
Other categories of membership or discounted rates are set as a percentage of the Full International Membership fee.
Information submitted for membership applications to Australia ICOMOS is treated in line with current Australian privacy laws and will not be disclosed outside of Australia ICOMOS without the consent of the applicant except in the course of business with ICOMOS International.

Requests may be made to the Australia ICOMOS Secretariat for membership to be suspended in certain circumstances for a period up to three years. After this, a new membership application would need to be made to rejoin. Circumstances where membership may be approved for suspension include
ICOMOS membership in another country. For temporary circumstances prohibiting professional practice, like injury, illness or caring for others, requests should be made for continued membership at the unwaged rates.

Any applicant who is already a member of ICOMOS in another country, or for whom the normal procedures are inappropriate, should consult the Membership Secretary.
A fixed proportion of fees are remitted to ICOMOS to support international activities and the remainder is retained by Australia ICOMOS for its own administration and activities.

If fees are being paid by an individual's employer, please ensure adequate individual identification accompanies payment.
