Susan McIntyre-Tamwoy

Indigenous Working Group Co-ordinator

Dr Susan McIntyre-Tamwoy is a postdoctoral research fellow at James Cook University, a position co-funded by the School of Anthropology, Archaeology and Sociology and the ARC Centre of Excellence in Coral Reef Studies. She has over 20 years experience working in both public and private practice in Indigenous and non indigenous heritage. She has formal qualifications in archaeology, anthropology and heritage conservation. She has run a successful private practice and has previously worked as a senior manager responsible for cultural heritage within the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. She also served for several years on the NSW Heritage Council and is currently an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at James Cook University.

Working with and for Aboriginal communities in NSW and Qld and through field research in northern Cape York, Susan has developed strong personal and professional ties with Aboriginal and Islander communities in Cape York, the Torres Strait and NSW. Co-ordinating and teaching environmental studies in a cross-cultural context to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in remote areas has sparked an interest and commitment to developing and providing cultural heritage training that is applied and relevant.

In addition to her membership of ICOMOS Susan is President of the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists Inc, a member of the Australasian Society for Historical Archaeology, the Australian Anthropological Society, the Australian Archaeological Association and the Society for Historical Archaeology (US).
